Easter to Spring DIY Wreath

I made another small wreath for our kitchen area. This is an easy DIY wreath. I added a little twist to the wreath to make it work for both Easter and spring.

Do you see how I made the felt eggs for the Easter wreath? They are easily removed when Easter is over and I still want spring decorations. Let me show you how I accomplished this and how I made this wreath.

Supplies:

• Yarn (I tried to pick a fuzzy yarn that would look like spring and grass...according to my husband, Mr. T, it looks like the Grinch's fur....yep he pretty much ruined the wreath for me...so pick your yarn wisely and please ignore my Grinch style yarn)
• Wreath form
• Ribbon
• Felt
• Embroidery Thread
• Fabric glue
• Hot glue
• Scissors
• Needle
• Velcro
• Fill (for inside of felt eggs)

Wrap your wreath form in yarn. If you are using a fuzzy type yarn like I did, you don't have to be super careful about pulling it tight and making sure you fill in every space. The yarn being fuzzy will fill that space in for you really nicely. 

Next, Cut out egg shapes from your felt. I used a template I cut on my Cricut because when I freehand things, I tend to cute like a Kindergartner. I sewed and filled them just like I did for my Valentine wreath...so to save myself the redundancy, I am going to show you how to make your felt eggs with my felt heart pictures. I hope it's not confusing. 

Start by gluing your ribbon at the top in the center of your egg.

I wanted the knots in my thread hidden inside the hearts and my eggs. In case you haven't done this before. Start with a knot. Sew starting on what will be the inside of the bottom piece of felt. Pull your thread through to the bottom. Pictured in #1 above. Add the second piece of felt on top. Start sewing normally around the heart /egg. You will notice that I started sewing part way up the side of the heart /egg and proceeded around  to the bottom as show in #2 and #3 above. I then filled the hearts/ eggs and finished sewing.

Hiding the final knot is a touch trickier, but still do-able. When you have reached the end and your thread is coming out the bottom of the heart/egg, place your needle as though you are going to come back up through the felt. Only sew through the bottom piece of felt. Try to do this near one of the stitches. After you have pulled your thread up through only one piece of the felt near a stitch, use your needle (show in #1 above) to go 'behind' the stitch. This is creating a knot. In #2 above, you can see how to pull that knot or thread around the stitch out. Thread your needle through the hole to create a knot at the stitch. You can add one more knot on top of this by making a knot the normal way right on top of this knot you created. That is what I did in #3 above. Clip your thread. If the knot is sticking out a little too far, just use your needle to push it back in a little farther. 

Next, I needed to find a way to attach the eggs to the wreath and be able to take them off when Easter was over.

I decided to use my good old friend, Velcro. I used adhesive Velcro, but on this fuzzy yarn, I still needed to hot glue it to make sure it would really stay on the wreath. So, the adhesive Velcro is not necessary as you will most likely need to hot glue it as well. 

I used one Velcro circle for the largest ribbon.

Being cheap frugal, I didn't want to have to buy more Velcro, it also was a big space saver to cut a circle in half and use one circle for two of the thin ribbons. I did this for the other two thin ribbons on the other side.

I just love the look of the embroidery thread around the edges of the eggs. To me, it is a fun detail. I thought about adding more detail to make them look like decorated eggs, but decided against the time that would take. Just an idea if you want to add more detail to make the eggs look more decorated.

I made the felt flowers to add the spring detail to the wreath. I had made the rose style felt flowers before, but I wanted some variety this time. I found a great tutorial on how to make 5 different kinds of felt flowers. I used two of them that were new to me for this wreath. The Crafted Sparrow: Felt Flowers Tutorials {5} to choose from.

I had seen this fantastic wreath at Valentine's day. I just loved how Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage had layered her flowers on the inside of the wreath instead of on top of the wreath: Make a $5 Valentine's Day Wreath {w/ burlap and yarn}. I knew I wanted to borrow that I idea in an upcoming wreath...so I used it for this wreath.

There you have it! An Easter to Spring Wreath. Once again, I'm getting double duty from something I took the time to make. 

Are we catching a theme around here?
