I shared our American Girl craft (<--click to see that post) with you on Monday. The girls were having so much fun with their mailboxes that I wanted to make some cute Valentines to fit into the mailboxes. I thought my girls would really enjoy them. It was just one of those Mommy things I really wanted to do for them.

American Girl Craft {Valentine Mailboxes}

I'm super excited to share with you today's super cute idea. I have an American Girl Craft for you. These are really easy and inexpensive mailboxes you can make for your dolls or even just for your child as a cute way to give them notes or Valentine's. What child wouldn't love their own little mailbox...I know mine like theirs!
American Girl Craft ~ Mailboxes
We got this idea from the latest American Girl magazine. They have such fun ideas in their magazine. My daughters opened up this month's issue and saw this idea. They loved it! I just happened to find the little mailboxes in the dollar section of Target the next day! Love when that happens. Then it was just a simple trip to 3 craft stores to find the candlesticks that act as a stand. Why couldn't they have had them at one of the first 2 stores? Oh well, we got them and they are done and super cute...so on with the tutorial for you.

Organizing Ideas: Entry Storage

I love an organized anything. I've got organizing ideas for you today. Today I want to show you some ideas and solutions I've come up with for our entry storage.
Organizing Ideas: Entry Storage
Our entry hall is small and needs to be organized to hold quite a few different things that are either needed in that area or don't have a place anywhere else in the house.

Activities for the Family ~ Snowball Fight

We had so much fun with our New Year's celebration and you all seemed to enjoy the post so much, I've decided to make a monthly series for you with activities for the family. This month, with it being winter and all, I came up with the idea for us to have a family snowball fight.
Activities for the Family
In order to get in on the fun, you will need pom poms...lots of white pom poms. I would think that if you wanted to skip the step of making your own pom poms, you could buy some packages of the small fuzzy pom poms that stores sell. If you chose that option, just know that they will get lost. We lost some of ours, which are much larger than those pom poms, and still don't know where they are...maybe behind the bookcase or TV...not really sure...don't really care.

Potato Filling

I've got another new series for you today. This series will be one of my Grandma's recipes each month. This month, I'm sharing her recipe for potato filling.
Potato Filling
What exactly is potato filling? It is a Pennsylvania dutch potato side dish. There are many variations but most have bread, eggs and onions added to mashed potatoes. Then cooked in the oven. I didn't remember ever eating this dish from my heritage.

Daisy Petals: Law/Promise & Yellow Petal Activity

I have some Daisy petal activity ideas for you today. I am a Daisy leader this year. I have tried to make the meetings fun and interactive for the girls. I'm going to show you two different activities today. I'll be back next month with a few more as well.

There are 11 Daisy Petals. The Center patch is for the Girl Scout promise with the 10 petals each representing a different part of the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law/Promise Bracelet

For one of our first meetings, while we were working on learning the Girl Scout promise and understanding that each of the petals is part of the law or promise, we made bracelets. If you are a Girl Scout leader or have been around Girl Scouts, you have likely seen bracelets similar to this using plain plastic beads (pony beads). I wanted to cute ours up a bit for our cute Daisy's. I also thought that flower beads would be much better for my Daisy scouts!

Winter Centerpiece

With Christmas being over, it was time to come up with a new centerpiece for our table. Today, I'm going to show you our winter centerpiece
Winter Centerpieces
Isn't it pretty and wintry? I LOVE the way it turned out. I know that lots of people go from Christmas to decorating for Valentine's day. We don't do that. We usually don't do anything Valentine until February 1st. Then, because our anniversary is at the end of February, I usually leave all the heartsy, cutesy stuff up until the end of February.

The Real Thing ~ Keeping it REAL ~January 2013

Today, I'm starting a new series that I'm kind of excited about and kind of nervous about. See, I love my blog and blogging. I love all the craftiness I get to display and skills I get to use. I love that I get to challenge myself, have a business, earn a little income and so many other things. It suits me really well.

There is one downside, especially when you name your blog "The Real Thing with the Coake Family." When blogging, it is really easy to only share what you want to with your readers. Which is a really great thing in most ways. However, as a reader, and trust me I read tons of blogs, it is so easy to be sucked into thinking that the person's blog whom you are reading has it all together, that their life is perfect and all neatly tied up, just like the gorgeous pictures and projects on the blog.

The thing is that for most any blogger you will meet, that is just not the case. We shove piles of toys or accumulated stuff out of the way to take that shot. We actually clean the table in order to show you our new centerpiece. It doesn't normally look like that. It normally looks....well normal and real, not fake and magazine glossy.

That is where this new series comes into play. I want to make sure that here at "The Real Thing with the Coake Family" we are keeping it REAL. I'm not a fake person by nature. I am generally a person that what you see is what you get and I mean what I say. I want that to shine through here. I don't want to be magazine glossy and perfect because that is just to damn hard and stressful (Yay, I swear quite a bit more in real life, but I usually keep it clean here so this can be a family thing, but now you know the truth). Yes, I will clean the table before I get pictures of my latest creation. Yep, I'm still going to shove the kids toys out of the way to get the picture I need, but you will know the truth, you will see the before shot here, you will see pictures of what the playroom, kid's room or dare I go there, even my room look like on a normal basis.

In this monthly post/series, I'm going to show the reality. I will take a picture of the mess before the glossy magazine (or the best photography I can get) pictures. I will share things with you that are part of my real life. Yes, I will still keep plenty private because I don't want to share EVERYTHING with you. I like you all, but not quite that much, and you wouldn't want to hear EVERYTHING either. lol!

Since this is a new series, I don't have any before pictures for you this month. Though I am working to get in the habit of taking some for next month.

This month, I wanted to share a bit of our REAL life something with which we are struggling. My kids are totally overtired and cranky and I am soooo sick of it! They started this new habit about a month ago. I have two girls who share a room. They are 10 (though she would want you to know she is almost 11) and 6. They are best friends. I love that! I do not love that they love to stay up late and 'party.' Their version of a party is to stay up late and talk and tell stories and such. It is really rather cute.

Photo Organization: Medium Method

I'm back with the second post in my series of different methods of photo organization. I know it has been quite a while, but with the holiday's just barely over, I thought this would be a great time to look at another method of organizing your digital photos.

Today, I'm going to show you my medium method of photo organization. The first post I wrote in this series was for those of you who feel very intimidated by this process and need something super simple. You can view that post here: Photo Organization: Simple Method

photo organization

I'm going to show you how to take your photos from your camera to organized, printed, and backed up in 4 simple steps. I realize that a lot of people do not print photos anymore. It is your choice as to if you print your photos. I think that ultimately you take photos to enjoy them. They either need to be put together in a digital album and printed in that format or they need to be printed and displayed or printed and put into a traditional album. You take the pictures to remember and enjoy the event...so do something with them. Hopefully this series can help you figure out a method that works for you and is not overwhelming in order to accomplish this goal.

This medium method has 4 steps:
1. Upload
2. Organize
3. Print
4. Backup

Let's talk about each one a bit.

Thank You Note

Now that Christmas is over and we have rung in the New Year, if you are like me it is time to write thank you notes. I've got a simple way to glam up a blank (and inexpensive) thank you note.
