I've got a fun craft and home decor idea for you today. How about some cute denim pom poms? Total cuteness and made into a garland a perfect addition to any summer or fall decor you have going on.
Now that we are back from our road trip, I'm working on getting caught up on email, projects, and feeling like I even know what day it is…lol!
I made these denim pom poms earlier this summer but never had a chance to show them to you. Today seemed like the perfect day!
I love denim…I think I live in denim. If not for Stitch Fix expanding my horizons, I would totally live in denim. I found some adorable denim ribbon and thought, why not add some denim to my home decor as well. The garland has been up in my living room all summer, but denim just seems like such a fall item as well, I think it may stay with my fall decor as well.
Let me show you how to make your own denim pom poms.
You will need to find denim ribbon. I found mine at Michael's, but Amazon has plenty of denim ribbon (affiliate link) as well.
The ribbon was too wide to work well to make a pom pom. I needed to cut my ribbon in quarters lengthwise. I started by cutting it in half.
Then cutting in quarters. I started doing this with scissors…
Then I got smart and started using my rotary cutter to make it a bit easier and faster.
For cutting the ribbon in half, line it up with the larger tick marks at the edge of one side of the ribbon.
For the quartering cut, line up the edge of the ribbon with the smaller tick marks.
Once you have cut your ribbon, wind it onto your pom pom maker (affiliate link). Make sure you have completely covered the whole surface of the maker with the ribbon.
Use a piece of the narrow cut ribbon to tie the center. You will need to pull tightly, but be careful as sometimes the cuts are more narrow and they will break as you try to tie a knot. Try to select your ribbon where that your cuts were fairly precise for this part.
Some of my denim pom poms came out a bit more like denim hay stacks and others came out and just needed a little bit of fluffing to look like cute denim pom poms. The more narrow your denim ribbon, the better the pom pom is what I learned.
To make the pom poms into a garland, cut a length of twine double the length needed. Thread a yarn needle with double or two strands of twine.
Place the needle with the twine directly through the center of the pom pom. You can see how I go through the part that has been tied. Continue threading all of your pom poms onto the twine.
Hang your twine and denim pom pom garland and enjoy!
Could it be any cuter? I love denim and I love pom poms…this garland equals perfection in my book. The cutting of the denim ribbon was a little time-consuming and required patience, but other than that, it was an easy craft with cute results.
