I’m back with another of my Grandma’s recipes. This time I made her Shoo Fly Pie. I thought it would make a great addition to your Easter dinner.
I have a printable version of the recipe for you at the bottom of this post.
As is becoming typical with my Grandma’s recipes, the directions were not of today’s cookbook standards. At least not the cookbooks I use. So, I was once again, making it up as I went a little bit.
I highly recommend that you cook your Shoo Fly pie on a baking sheet. Not only does it make it tons easier to pull the pie out of the oven, but this pie has a tendency to expand and drip all over. With the baking sheet below the pan, it catches all the drips and you don’t have a super messy oven to clean up.
I had only ever eaten my Mom’s version of this pie, not my Grandma’s. My Mom’s version and my version are different. I have no idea if one is right and one is wrong. They are just different. I guess I will find out when my Dad comes to visit next time, since he grew up eating my Grandma’s pie and could tell me the difference.
I think my pie came out a bit more dense than it was supposed to. I think it is supposed to have more of that dark, molassses, gooeyness that you can see at the bottom. I’m not sure if I did something wrong or if it is the fact that I use white whole wheat flour which is more dense. Sometimes recipes have to be fiddled with a little bit when I am using this type of flour.
It was still delicious… at least to me. My husband doesn’t like molasses, so he didn’t even want any. My kids both took one bite, turned up their noses and declared that they DO NOT like Shoo Fly Pie….so I can’t give this recipe ringing endorsements, but it smelled delicious and was a great walk down memory lane for me. I remember the smell and yummyness of Shoo Fly Pie from my childhood. Sometimes we ate it for breakfast if I remember correctly.
Hopefully, if you give it a try, you will have great results and really enjoy your pie! It would be a great addition to an Easter celebration, maybe even for breakfast should you like pie for breakfast! 😉
