I've got another of my Grandma's recipes for you today. This one is an old fashioned recipe for funny cake.
I found this recipe in her recipe box and was intrigued with the ingredients as well as how this cake was made. Of course the name helped as well. I really wanted to try funny cake and figure out what made it funny.
I didn't do any specific research on the funny cake and where it got its name, but I did look at a few other funny cake recipes to see if there were any that made less cake. I found out that funny cake has its origins in the Amish community. That makes sense as my Grandma was Pennsylvania Dutch which is in the same region as many Amish communities.
If you notice in the pictures above, the two cakes in the background, I tried to smooth the cake layer out after placing it in the pan on top of the bottom layer. As you can see, the cake layer expands and does not need to be smoothed out. It will expand together and cover the chocolate layer if you carefully place large spoonfuls of the cake layer on top of the chocolate (filling) layer.
I believe this cake is called funny cake because it can't quite make up its mind. The outer portion of the cake is made with pie crust. There is a bottom layer that is kind of like a pie filling layer. Then the top layer is a cake layer. Finally you cook it in a cake pan (these are my favorite cake pans). It is quite a funny cake!
Finally it was time to taste this funny cake.
The chocolate pie filling is quite yummy with a light fluffy cake layer on top and a crunchy pie crust. It is quite the funny cake. Most members of my family really liked the cake. We all agreed that we would like it with a touch more chocolate, but that is my choc-o-holic family for you! 😉
This one recipe makes a lot of cake. One recipe makes three cakes. Way more than my family needs…that is for sure. I would recommend that you make this for an event, when you plan to have a party, or lots of company…it makes a lot of cake.
