I've got a fun tree decorating idea for you today. A few years ago, we bought a small tree for the playroom. I thought it would be fun for the girls to decorate their own tree and it would also be a nice touch for when my parents visit, as the playroom is the guest room as well. This year we found a cute mini tree skirt at Target (affiliate link) along with a set of mini ornaments. Now our tree is a bit more official. Pumpkin was telling me how she liked it but it seemed a little plain, as though it still needed something. I came up with an idea, she loved it…and now you see it on their tree. I made a pom pom and popcorn garland for their tree.
Isn't it cute? Let me show you how I put it together and a few of the details.
Yarn (made into pom poms: Tutorial here if you need it)
To make the garland, I tried a yarn needle so I could thread the baker's twine but it broke all of the popcorn. I tried a regular needle, but I couldn't thread the baker's twine onto it. We all agreed we needed the baker's twine because the garland was too plain on regular thread. A late evening run to the craft store by Mr. T and we had a pack of doll needles that worked perfectly. The doll needles came in a pack of about 5 needles with various size heads and needles. I found the medium sized needle in the pack worked the best. It worked well to thread the baker's twine and didn't break all of the popcorn, though it did break its fair share.
Once you have the correct size needle, knot your twine, decide on your pattern, pop in a good movie and hope you have steel fingers or are better at threading popcorn than I am! lol! My fingers were a bit beaten up after this, but in the end I got this cute garland.
Cute! Can't you see how the baker's twine adds some fun to the garland?! The girls wanted space in between each piece of the garland, so the baker's twine added some interest to their patter. I got my twine from Pick Your Plum…huge roll at a great price!
Do you remember the new storage shelving we put in our playroom during our re-organization this year? The tree fits perfectly and looks really cute!
Pom pom and popcorn garland….love the details!
There you have it, a cute tree decorating idea in case you need something fairly easy to add a little something to your tree. Do you have more than one tree in your house? Any Kid's Christmas trees?
